Dead State Fallout, by Derek Shupert - A Sassy Brit Review

When we meet teenager James he is out hunting with his dad, who is a bit of a survivalist and has a shady past as a Marine. Immediately, I’m reading in between the lines….this is a zombie book, does his father already know something was going to go down? Was he sneakily  training James up ready for when all hell to be let loose? Could he even have been involved?  Well, maybe not. Maybe I’m letting my imagination take things too far, but I love it when a book does this to me. All those ‘what if’s’ make my mind race!

So I’m reading like a maniac eager to find out more. We discover James’ bestie Dawson has sent video clips of things going on that can’t be explained. People with their brains shot out are running around covered in blood, and chomping anyone who gets within reach. James doesn’t believe it to be real for one minute and assumes his friend Dawson is winding him up, but out camping with his father he can’t help but feel uneasy. What if they are real?

And sure enough, it doesn’t take long for the two of them to discover the truth.  The zombie, or “chasers” as James and Dawson call them, attack James and his father. It doesn’t end well.  From here on James, Dawson and Duke (the lovable and brave golden retriever) are now relying on the survival techniques Jame’s father taught him in order to meet up with his mum and little sister in a safe place. But they’re miles away, and with several thousand chasers in between them and their safety, who can they trust along this incredible journey?

I really enjoyed Derek Shupert’s debut, young adult, zombie story. I felt I could see the character James growing up before my very eyes. He’s a kid that’s been thrown into a nightmare world where not even the adults know what to do. Now all the decisions he makes are his own. And that’s BIG!

There are some great action scenes in this book, and the author writes his horror with enough gore to fit in with the genre, but not too much that it becomes an adult book that’s too horrifying.  Some scenes were sad, some made me laugh out loud. Overall it was a fun read, which I read fast. There is, however, a cliffhanger ending which reminded me of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Ring films, in that James has a long trip ahead of him, and this is only the first book of an epic adventure. I really do hope I can read the rest of the books to find out how this series ends! When he does indeed meet up with his family, will it be too late? Will they have been bitten and become chasers? See my mind is working overtime again… I’ll shut up before I take up anymore of your time lol

To sum up. Walking Dead? Eat your heart out – literally lol YA zombie fun you must read!!
