It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for my weekly spotlight features, “What’s on your desk, Wednesday?”, where we take a visit to see what’s on somebody’s desk and have a good old nose around. (No kidding!) So without further ado, let’s meet today’s desk, I mean guest…

This is a desk?
Do you see this picture of my desk? It looks…yes, that’s right…chaotic. Guess what sort of writing routine a person with a desk like that is going to have.
Sassy Brit : Tell us about your writing routine:
J. Arlene Culiner : I sometimes write in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes in late afternoon. Sometimes, I don’t write at all: no word count goals, no organization, and I rarely know which manuscript I’ll be working on. But, amazingly enough, I have completed and had published five romances, two mysteries, three history/creative non-fiction books (two are making the rounds, looking for a publisher), and three other books in French.
As for that black blob just on the left hand side of the photo, just beside the earphones, it’s a home studio, made of a felt box, egg boxes, stuffed animals, a few towels, and foam. Inside, in the heart of all that, is a microphone. Why? Because I also do audiobooks, and I also have a storytelling podcast. No, I don’t have one of those slick white soundproof recording studios. Yes, I have to stop constantly because planes fly overhead (this house is on a flight path), and trains roar by constantly (I’m between two train lines).
My environment:
Here’s another photo: my writing space. Please note that there is no window with a pretty view. Why? Because I write in a closet. No daylight, no fresh air, and no idea what the weather’s like out there, but since all the scenes, the temperature, the odours, and the noises are right here in my head, why do I need all that real life interference? Okay, yes, I sometimes take trains, or wander off to Ukraine, Romania, and Poland for research. But the very best travels take place right here.
True Confessions:
I have to make a confession. This closet where I work is my winter office in a house just outside Paris. For the other six months of the year, I’m in my summer office in a former inn, way out in the sticks in the west of France. That’s a whole other world. Yes, in this photo of my summer office, my desk looks nice and clean. But, believe me, sit me down there, and within minutes, it looks just as bad as my winter desk. Sigh.
