Welcome to our WHAT’S ON YOUR DESK, WEDNESDAY? Our Weekly Spotlight Feature!

Lets’s take a look at where stories are created, from the desk of Alice Renaud.

“What’s  on your desk, Wednesday?”

Sassy Brit: Thanks for joining us here, Alice!   It’s a pleasure to have you.

May I ask if you have a writing routine?

Alice Renaud: My writing routine goes something like this.

1. Sit at desk.

2. Read what I wrote the day before.

3. Decide it’s rubbish and I might as well rewrite. Start rewriting.

4. Child wants snack/drink/bath. Leave desk to provide snack/drink/bath, etc.

5. Return to desk. Start writing new words. Excitement surges. The words flow!

6. Realize child is still in bath/suspiciously quiet. Leave desk to check.

7. Return to desk. Count words written so far. Realize they’re short of the day’s writing goal (usually 500 words – hey, I don’t write fast.)

8. Add words to reach target.

9. Time for dinner!

10. Finish writing.

11. Collapse in front of the TV.

12. Realize I’ve forgotten to do the washing up and child should have been in bed, oooh, about 20 minutes ago.

Fortunately I have the best husband in the world. I could never write anything without him.

SB: If you could write a book with anyone in the world, who would you choose?

AR: Neil Gaiman. He’s one of my favourite authors, and he has form when it comes to collaborating with other authors.

SB: Future books?

AR: A Merman’s Choice is the first book in a trilogy about shape-shifting mermen. I am currently working with my wonderful editor/creative writing tutor, Laurie Sanders, to edit the second book in the series, “Music for a Merman”. I have just started writing the third book, “Mermaids Marry in Green”. I have also written the outline for a Christmas novella, “Santa and the Mermaid”, to complete the series. As Dory says in “Finding Dory”: “Keep on swimming!”

A Merman’s Choice

For centuries the shape-shifting mermen of the Morvann Islands have lived incognito among humans. But one of them, Yann, has developed some bad habits. Like rescuing humans, even when doing so risks revealing his true nature. When he fishes Alex out of the sea, he doesn’t expect her to reappear eight months later, and turn his life upside down by asking him to be her guide.

Alex is determined to fulfil a promise to her dying grandmother, by gathering pictures and stories of the Morvanns. But she soon discovers that, on these remote Welsh islands, legends have a habit of becoming true!

Over the course of a few days, Yann and Alex grow close. But some mermen hate humans. Their hostility, and Yann’s secret, threaten to tear the couple apart just as they are discovering that they are soul mates. Can Yann overcome the obstacles in his path and make the right choice?

I was born and brought up in Brittany, Western France, my father was French and my mother British (from Wales). I moved to London, UK, in 1997, where I now live with my husband and son. I work full time as a compliance specialist in a pharmaceutical company. I have been writing in my free time since I was 14. I got quite a few short stories published in UK magazines, before moving to longer fiction. I wrote three contemporary romance books, but didn’t find a publisher for them. I then realized that mermen, sea witches and water demons were a lot more fun than sheikhs and billionaires! My first two paranormal romances did not find a publisher either, then I wrote A Merman’s Choice, which was accepted for publication this year by Black Velvet Seductions. It is the first book in a fantasy romance trilogy inspired by the landscapes and legends of Brittany and Wales. I love reading and writing stories, and sharing them with anyone who’s interested!

  1. Alice, your day sounds wonderful! And your desk is so much neater than mine–I’m jealous. Also, Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers! I’ve read several of his but Good Omens remains one of my most favorite books–and one of the few I’ve read more than once. Your book is delightful, by the way.

    1. Thanks Dee! The desk is tidy because it is tiny – there is literally room for nothing other than the laptop and the printer 🙂 I’m glad you liked A Merman’s Choice.

  2. Alice I love your sense of humor. I can’t wait to read your book and now based on your interview comment about Neil Gaiman it looks like I’ll be reading one of his books too.

  3. Hi Alice,
Your writing routine made me chuckle. I can’t wait to get my copy of your book. I think Yann and I are going to get along fine! This will be my first read about mermans. I’m looking forward to it.

  4. I was actually reading one of Neil’s books a few weeks back, The View from the Cheap Seats. He is a very unique individual.

Working, writing, and parenting is definitely tricky. I tip my hat to any mother who can write at home. *lol*
