HAPPY FRIDAY!
This week’s Book Beginning and Friday56 choice is…
Continuing with my ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Friday Theme (here’s the last Friday’s post) I am now on to the next book in the series…
Why? I received the lovely book The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations by Joe Tracz (book pictured above) to review and realised I just had to watch the Netflix TV series, which I am now doing, at the same time as reading all the books!
So without further ado… I present… Yep, I’m creating a new look!
The Miserable Mill
(A Series of Unfortunate Events Book 4)
by Lemony Snicket and Brett Helquist
UK READERS: Check out the series here! (New versions!)
My First Thoughts?
Dear reader,
There is nothing to be found in Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-selling series to read. But if you insist on discovering the unpleasant adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, then proceed with caution…
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky.
In The Miserable Mill the siblings encounter a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident and coupons.
In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted.
Despite their wretched contents, ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ has sold 60 million copies worldwide and been made into a Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey. And in the future things are poised to get much worse, thanks to the forthcoming Netflix series starring Neil Patrick Harris. You have been warned.
Are you unlucky enough to own all 13 adventures? Yep, I am going to bore you share my Lemony Snicket love and devotion — ten more times! You lucky things, you! If you don’t want to read them all by then, well, I give up! lol
The Bad Beginning (The Friday 56 post).
The Reptile Room (last Friday’s Friday56 Post)
The Wide Window (last Friday56 post)
The Miserable Mill
The Austere Academy
The Ersatz Elevator
The Vile Village
The Hostile Hospital
The Carnivorous Carnival
The Slippery Slope
The Grim Grotto
The Penultimate Peril
The End
And what about All the Wrong Questions? In this four-book series a 13-year-old Lemony chronicles his dangerous and puzzling apprenticeship in a mysterious organisation that nobody knows anything about:
‘Who Could That Be at This Hour?’
‘When Did you Last See Her?’
‘Shouldn’t You Be in School?’
‘Why is This Night Different from All Other Nights?’
Lemony Snicket was born before you were and is likely to die before you as well. He was born in a small town where the inhabitants were suspicious and prone to riot. He grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. Until recently, he was living somewhere else.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Brett Helquist was born in Ganado, Arizona, grew up in Orem, Utah, and now lives in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Brigham Young University and has been illustrating ever since. His art has appeared in many publications, including Cricket magazine and The New York Times.
HAVE YOU READ THIS SERIES?
I can’t wait to visit your blogs to find out. Have a great weekend, may your books be with you!
Luv Sassy X

I’m on my third Kindle! I’ve loved ebooks for a long while, but I do still enjoy a physical book more. (OMG! Please don’t lynch me! LOL) Honestly, physical books make the whole reading experience much more pleasurable for me. I can’t read my Kindle in the bath, and I’m wary of taking my Kindle anywhere it can be dropped and broken. I could go on, but I’ll leave it there for now.
However, at the same time, my Kindle (named Tim III after my husband lol ) is always with me whilst I’m working, so if I have a moment or two where my browser is playing up and going slow, I’ll just pick up my Kindle and carry on where I left off. My Kindle is also very useful at night when my husband is telling me to turn the light off, so he can get some sleep! The in-built light is a godsend at those times! aha!

I am also reading on Kindle mostly at nights – it is perfect. And when traveling you can have hundreds of books with you with no actual weight.
I have read the whole series last March: I was involved in say first 5-6 books but then I felt disconnected and bored. Hope it will not happen to you.
Actually the first sentence of The Miserable Mill can be a motto for Book beginning meme))
lol yes It can – the Book Beginning Meme Motto! LOL Oh yes, I do hope I don;t get bored – I’m around that thin blue line lol (Book 4)
Yes Kindle is fab for nighttime reading. Less intrusive 🙂
I went and added the first Lemony Snickett book to my GR list. I definitely want to read the series! I added you to the Linky. Happy weekend! x
That’s brilliant news lol I finally wore you down, huh? THanks for adding me, Freda x
I’m on my third or fourth Kindle too. I mostly read Kindle books and have been know to buy copies of Kindle books even when I have the print book on my shelf. I started this series but the writing style wasn’t for me. This week I am reading Cast in Oblivion by Michelle Sagara. Happy reading!
I love the light on my kindle. I’m on my third too but this is the first one I’ve had that’s backlit.
Hi Nicci! I know what you mean, my first one was a very basic but just what I needed. Amazon have improved things so much since that very old version I had. Thanks for stopping by!
I haven’t read the books, but I did enjoy the Netflix series.
I love this series so much! 🙂
