The Friday 56 (With Instagram 56 & Book Beginnings)
The Binding Song by Elodie Harper is my feature book for this Friday 56 Meme. I’m also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.
This is a murder, mystery, horror, psychological thriller – according to the shelves on Goodreads. Add to your Goodreads Shelf! Find me on Goodreads! I love to chat books.
No spider story today, thank goodness! But I strangely picked another story that mentioned more scuttling. (Is someone, or something, trying to tell me something? Or am I just reading too many scary books lately?) Spooky! Anyway, this is a book I was sent as part of the Amazon Vine Reviewer programme. Thank you, luvvies!
So how’s it going so far?
I’m actually really enjoying this book. It’s very atmospheric, in a creepy, claustrophobic sense. The lead character has left everything she knows behind to start a new job in a prison as their psychologist, and the other staff are not very friendly and keep themselves to themselves, so she’s feeling pretty singled out and alone.
To cap it all, there’s already been a gruesome death, and a strange eyeless woman seems to be the cause of it. Yes, there’s a foreboding sense of doom surrounding this character and I’ve only got to page 56!
Here are a couple of sentences from page 56:
“It’s probably my imagination,” she conceded. “It’s the stuff of nightmares, calling for help on the landings, and nobody coming,”
Book Beginnings: (Here’s the scuttling…)
Remember last week in My Sister it was a scuttling cockroach? (Here’s a quick reminder!)
The break in the trees told him nothing. Ryan had no idea how far he had travelled or in what direction. He longed to sink down into the mud, rest just for a moment, but instead he scuttled across the open patch of long grass, bent double like a crab.
Blurb Taken from Goodreads:
A chilling debut for fans of Mo Hayder and Sharon Bolton, THE BINDING SONG takes you on a trip to Halvergate Prison. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to leave…
Dr Janet Palmer is the new lead psychologist at HMP Halvergate in a remote, bleak area of Norfolk. At first, she was excited by the promotion. Then she starts to see how many secrets are hiding behind the high walls.
A string of inmates have committed suicide, leaving no reasons why, and her predecessor has disappeared – along with his notes. The staff are hostile, the threat of violence is ever-present, and there are rumours of an eyeless woman stalking the corridors, punishing the inmates for their sins.
Janet is determined to find out what is really going on. But the longer she stays and the deeper she digs, the more uncertain she feels.
Halvergate is haunted by something. But it may be a terror worse than ghosts…

I adore Sharon Bolton’s books. This sounds like one for me – so glad you mentioned it. My book today is Dancing the Death Drill by Fred Khumalo.
Eeek! This one sounds like it would scare the pants off of me! I hope that you enjoy it. 🙂
Hi Sassy,
I have crossed to Goodreads and added this one to my ‘Want To Read’ list.
I love a good psychological thriller and that new cover art is chilling in itself!
I can live with the notion of the one eyed woman, but I’m not so keen on the many references to ‘scuttling’ you managed to drop into the post 🙂
Thanks for sharing, I look forward to reading your thoughts about the book.

My Friday 56 from The Shack
I don’t know this author, but glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
Ooh, this looks like an unnerving read. I don’t think I’ve heard a novel described as claustrophobic and I’m intrigued.
This is my kind of story, hope you are enjoying it. Here is my post
