HAPPY FRIDAY!

This week’s Book Beginning and Friday56 choice is…

Continuing with my ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Friday Theme (here’s the last Friday’s post) I am now on to the next book in the series…

The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations: An Utterly Unreliable Account of Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events on Alternative-Read.com

Why? I received the lovely book The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations by Joe Tracz (book pictured above) to review and realised I just had to watch the Netflix TV series, which I am now doing, at the same time as reading all the books!

So without further ado… I present…

My First Thoughts?

Finally the Baudelaire children have some allies that are not flaky! (I’m rooting for them to stick with these most unfortunate kids. They could do with some luck, however short-lived!)

In The Austere Academy  – Book 5 I have to say that Carmelita Spats (the fantastic drawing above in black and white) truly does deserve that ‘least delightful person on Earth’ gold medal award, she’s a monster!  lol
I found that she reminds me so much of Violet Elizabeth Botts in the Just William stories. Anyone here old enough to have read those, or (worse still, showing my age) seen that Just William series on the telly, and actually know what I mean?
“I’ll scream and scream and scream until I’m sick!”
I swear Carmelita is Violet reincarnated!
Runs off to get my zimmer frame… or should that be shuffles?

Dear reader,

There is nothing to be found in Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-selling series to read. But if you insist on discovering the unpleasant adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, then proceed with caution…

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky.

In The Austere Academy the siblings face snapping crabs, strict punishments, dripping fungus, comprehensive exams, violin recitals, S.O.R.E. and the metric system.

In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted.

Despite their wretched contents, ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ has sold 60 million copies worldwide and been made into a Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey. And in the future things are poised to get much worse, thanks to the forthcoming Netflix series starring Neil Patrick Harris. You have been warned.

Are you unlucky enough to own all 13 adventures? Yep, I am going to bore you share my Lemony Snicket love and devotion — ten more times! You lucky things, you! If you don’t want to read them all by then, well, I give up! lol

The End

And what about All the Wrong Questions? In this four-book series a 13-year-old Lemony chronicles his dangerous and puzzling apprenticeship in a mysterious organisation that nobody knows anything about:

‘Who Could That Be at This Hour?’

‘When Did you Last See Her?’

‘Shouldn’t You Be in School?’

‘Why is This Night Different from All Other Nights?’

Lemony Snicket was born before you were and is likely to die before you as well. He was born in a small town where the inhabitants were suspicious and prone to riot. He grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. Until recently, he was living somewhere else.

Brett Helquist was born in Ganado, Arizona, grew up in Orem, Utah, and now lives in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Brigham Young University and has been illustrating ever since. His art has appeared in many publications, including Cricket magazine and The New York Times.

HAVE YOU READ THIS SERIES?

Is the beginning making you wonder what the rest of the story will be like?
What are you currently reading?

I can’t wait to visit your blogs to find out. Have a great weekend, may your books be with you!

As much as I love my Kindle (see last week’s answer) and I also read from my phone, I am first and foremost a physical book lover and (not-so-secret) book sniffer, so I get a lot of physical books. Housing them is always a problem. But the biggest problem I find is getting rid of a lot of them. And it pains me to even say those words! But due to some heavy ARC restrictions, rules and regulations, some ARCs cannot be passed on to friends, or even given away to charity shops for others to enjoy.  Very frustrating! I really dislike throwing them away – so I tend to hang on to them. An awful lot of them. Until I forced to sadly purge…

Where do I get my books?

I buy my books from Amazon, and a support a local bookstore when I can get there. Although, most of my books are sent to me via authors, publishers and I’m very fortunate to be in the Amazon Vine and Amazon Influencer programmes.

  1. fuonlyknew – Voracious reader and love to do reviews. Will review yours! Love Doritos and chocolate. A fan of furry friends. I'm afraid of things that go bump in the night! I do reviews at request when time allows. Prefer print versions but also will do ebooks. If I can stand to let them go, I use some print review copies for giveaways.. Also like doing ARC reviews to promote authors and their books. I encourage authors to comment. My reviews are posted on my blog, Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari, Smashwords and Barnes&Noble.

I will probably never get around to reading the series but I do plan to watch the show. Sounds like a whole lot of fun!

  2. This is such a fun series. I’ve read many of them with my children. I will have to check out the Netflix shows.

  3. What I love is the aplomb and humor that the author uses to detail the horrible things that happen in the series. Makes you shiver, but also compels you to keep reading because you just can’t wait to find out what is next.

Kudos on all the reading/reviewing you do and that you are an Amazon influencer.

  4. Hi, Thanks for stopping by my website! Love you website! Yeah, It took me ages to being approved for my first book @ NetGalley but then I read one “ready to read” book, reviewed it, and then I got approved for my first book. Now I don’t have problems being approved but! I miss the time! I want to read my TBRs and I want to read new books and don’t have much time for both.

I don’t know why you couldn’t post your link… But don’t worry I was able to find your answer on your website 😉

BTW, I’m a book sniffer, too! Can’t bit the smell of printed paper!

    1. Book sniffing, in fact any paper that comes into my house, must be my second favourite hobby! lol

  5. Carla – Canada – I am a retired teacher/librarian. I love to read, especially to my grandchildren. I read most genres, but lately have gravitated to cozy mysteries, romance (not erotic) and Christian Fiction. I do enjoy a good thriller every now and then, as well as some fantasy and the odd sci-fi. I have ventured into Blog tours, but I do not do well reading under pressure. I travel to Florida for 2 to 3 months in the winter (Canadian Snowbirder) but otherwise live in Windsor, Ontario Canada. Feel free to follow and comment on my blog. I try to respond to all comments.

I read the first three and that was it. I have a set of 7 I think, to pass on to my grandkids.

  6. Getting rid of books is always super hard for me too! It is the small little hoarder in me like “what if I suddenly find interest in this book or want to re-read it?!” so I get it! 😀 One thing I did a few years ago is I made a TBR jar and if I picked a book more than three times and each time I didn’t feel like reading it I decided it was time to let it go. That definitely helped even if it hurt a bunch haha. Thanks for stopping by my post!

    1. That is a great idea! It really makes you think about why you are keeping it, if you keep putting it back and leaving it there, when it is taking up space for books you really can’t wait to get to…
