My First Thoughts:

I am really enjoying this. Not far into it yet, but I plan to change that over the weekend! I’ve been sent the second one to review and was advised by fellow bloggers it was best to read this one first, so that’s what I’m doing. 🙂

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Blurb:

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

I love the cover and the excerpts! Not my usual read, but tempting. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

    1. Brilliant! Hope you get to try it, too. You’re welcome. I love your blog. 🙂

    1. Thanks! Early stages yet, but so far so good!

  2. I just wanted to let you know, because you probably can’t see this, that your little boxes where we are supposed to log our email, name, and website don’t function properly. In order for me to message you with a comment I had to login via Facebook. Contact WordPress or check your settings?

    1. Thanks! I will look into it. No I didn’t know. Much appreciated ! Are you on Blogspot? I have a lot of trouble leaving messages on those sites with a WP signature, I wonder if WP is treating you the same? Thanks for letting me know.

    1. Exactly my thoughts, I’m expecting great things lol

  3. This is a book I want to read!
To answer your question about the book, I’m still early in so we’re focused on his childhood. He flips around a bit so a few moments with Sid came about, but we’re not really there yet in the book. It is well worth a read though, as a fan, I find a deeper connection getting to know more about them as people and not just musicians, 🙂
    Happy weekend! x

    1. Oh I really need to read that, even more now LOL 🙂 Still would like to know the answer , although I suspect he won’t talk about selling out – unless – there’s a good reason to tell us. Even so, I forgive him LOL Heard of the bands I mentioned?

    1. So pleased to hear it ! Have a great weekend, too!

  4. I would really like to revisit this one because it’s a series I’d like to eventually finish. Why isn’t there more time to read? Hope you enjoy the rest of this one!

    1. Thank you! Yes. I missed this when it first came out. So pleased to try it now I’ve already got the second one to read AND as Yvonne said, the 3rd book is due out next spring. Hope you get to read it!

  5. Hi Sassy,

This probably isn’t a series I would enjoy that much and would therefore remain quite close to the bottom of my TBR list, despite the fact that those opening lines really do set the scene of secrecy and furtiveness.

If you do decide to go ahead and read both the books in the series which you already own, you might want to know that book #3 is due for publication next spring … with early advance reviewers awarding excellent ratings.

    1. I’ve just started book two, had to continue the story straight away! 😀
