Someone Like Me by M.R. Carey - Review

Beating up the backlog header on Alternative-Read.com

I was very excited to get hold of a copy of Someone Like Me by M. R. Carey, as I’ve loved this author’s previous books. I don’t know what genre this book officially comes under (without checking) but I’d say for me it worked as a supernatural horror. If you like Stephen King you’ll enjoy this. It has also been likened to a new Jekyll and Hyde, which I tend to agree with. But Gone Girl? Not sure where that fits in, maybe someone can enlighten me! lol I did, however, find Someone Like Me to have some very similar attributes to Stranger Things 3, and I’m totally pleased this book was written first, as far as I’m aware!
So, on with the review –

Someone Like Me by M.R. Carey - Review

Someone Like Me by M. R.  Carey

From the very beginning I was totally swept away by this story. When Liz Kendall is attacked by her abusive ex-husband it is almost fatal. Liz is fiercely protective of her two children, Zac and Molly, and will do anything to protect them, even if that means taking the brunt of her husband’s mood swings so they do not get hurt.
Meanwhile, a seemingly unrelated girl, Fran and friend of Liz’s son, Zac, is recovering from a terrible kidnapping. To help her cope she has an invisible friend in the form of a warrior fox from a kids television programme.
But why was she kidnapped in the first place? Her kidnapper claimed to see something, or someone within her. and almost killed in order to free her from this ghostly thing. Immediately we assume he is crazy as no one sees things like that.
However, back in the present day, Fran is shocked when she sees the same thing within Zac’s mum. When she tells Zac, he of course doesn’t take too kindly to these weird and wild accusations, but as the story unfolds he starts to wonder if there was any truth in what Fran was trying to tell him.
Evil forces are at play and his mum is not the same person she used to be. When his own life and the life of his sister’s is threatened by his own mother the truth starts to show its ugly head. But what can three kids do about something much bigger than themselves?
I couldn’t read this fast enough! Someone Like Me had me totally enthralled, and I cannot wait to read whatever this author comes up with next.  What an exciting, cleverly written, supernatural story! I do hope this one is turned into a film.

Someone Like Me by M. R.  Carey

‘A TAUT, CLEVER THRILLER THAT LEFT ME UTTERLY BEREFT WHEN I’D FINISHED. IT’S A MASTERPIECE’ Louise Jensen, bestselling author of The Sister

From the author of the million-copy bestseller The Girl With All the Gifts comes a heart-stopping psychological thriller with a twist you won’t see coming and a heroine you can’t trust . . .

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.

Liz Kendall wouldn’t hurt a fly. Even when times get tough, she’s devoted to bringing up her kids in a loving home.

But there’s another side to Liz, one that’s dark and malicious. She will do anything to get her way – no matter how extreme.

And when her alter-ego takes control, the consequences are devastating.

Someone Like Me is the intoxicating new thriller from the phenomenal M. R. Carey. A modern take on the Jekyll and Hyde tale, think Gone Girl meets Stephen King – but you won’t have read anything quite like this before . . .

Praise for M. R. Carey:

‘An intense, haunting thriller with heart. You will not want to put this down’ Laini Taylor

‘If you only read one novel this year, make sure it’s this one’ Martina Cole
