Bone Rattle (The Arliss Cutter Thrillers Book 3) by Marc Cameron

Review by Elise Cooper

Bone Rattle by Marc Cameron is a bone-chilling read. It is very descriptive, shocking, suspenseful, and action-packed.  Readers have the unsettling feeling that they are tracking and finding fugitives alongside the Marshals.

The novel opens with the discovery of a skeleton and a bone rattle found in a mine. The bad guy is head of the mining company and has dealings with two mob brothers. Cutter’s team is asked to protect those brothers who are on trial. The trial is almost immediately derailed when the prosecuting attorney is murdered. Now the Marshals are trying to find a witness with whom the attorney was supposed to be meeting, and Cutter enlists the help of a freelance journalist who has information. They must find the witness before a killer on the loose succeeds in silencing the witness, Cutter, and the journalist.

What makes these series of books interesting is how Cameron intertwines within the story the actual duties of a US Marshal. In this book he explains how they track the bad guys.  His protagonist, Arliss Cutter, will need all these skills to hunt a serial killer, another plotline, who likes to decapitate female torsos and leave them without a head, hands, or feet. This plotline as well as some personal background will be resolved in the next book.

Interview

Elise Cooper: Why Alaska?

Marc Cameron:  I spent twenty-two years in the Marshal Service, with the last fifteen years in Alaska.  When I went down to Juneau Alaska to research this story in real time, I ran into a group called Juneau’s Hidden History.  Juneau is an interesting place since the only access is by plane or boat.  It cannot be reached by road.  This allows the state legislators to basically be isolated, which means there is room for conspiracy theories that included the mines.

EC:  What is the task force?

MC:  I used to be the Deputy in charge of the task force that consists of multiple agencies.  Everyone works together including Anchorage police, Alaskan State Troopers.  They focus on the worst of the worst. There are rivalries among the agencies although not so much with those working on the ground.  Every agent including the US Marshals has a creep like the FBI Agent in the book.

EC: What about the relationship with the journalist?

MC:  Regarding the journalist I wanted to show how over the course of a career Marshals work closely with civilians. Sometimes there is an intimacy because of the shared psychological aspects.  But there is no physical relationship between Cutter and the journalist, Lori Maycomb.

EC:  How would you describe Lori?

MC:  She is inspired by a great deal of people who are good honest journalists as well as my wife.  She has her own demons, an alcoholic problem that she admits too. I have a family job is finding the violent people.  There is politics because the boss of each district is appointed by the US President.  Every time there is a new administration there is a new boss.

EC:  You discuss tracking techniques?

MC:  Anytime there is a big case when someone is on the run the Marshal Service is involved.  We helped with the DC Sniper case.  The Tracking Stick is used as a measuring stick.  Picture it as a walking stick with rubber bands that could move up and down to show measurement.  It measures the length of strides.  Swinging the tracking stick back and forth works as a guide for the eye to see all the details.

EC:  A heads up about your next books?

MC: The next Cutter book is Cold Snap, out this time next year.  It takes place where this book left off.  It has a serial killer in Northern Alaska that decapitates the female torso. Personal and plotline questions from this book will be resolved.

The next Clancy Jack Ryan Sr. book is titled Chain Of Command.  I put more technical stuff in the Tom Clancy novels because readers expect it than in my Cutter books.  I write Tom Clancy characters in the spirit of Clancy but in my own voice. Ryan is trying for pharmaceutical independence because 90% is made in China and India.  During the 1950s to 1970s these companies were in Puerto Rico. In this story Ryan wants them to return there.  The thriller part has a rich pharmaceutical person kidnapping the First Lady.  It comes out in November of this year.

THANK YOU!!

Blurb

A thrilling new crime novel from the author of Tom Clancy: Shadow of the Dragon, perfect for fans of the electrifying novels of Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver, and C.J. Box.

“Cameron’s books are riveting page-turners.”—Mark Greaney, #1 New York Times bestselling author

In the icy heart of Alaska, a series of gruesome murders leads Deputy US Marshal Arliss Cutter into a firestorm of searing corruption, clashing cultures, and bone-chilling fear…

In Juneau, a young Native archeologist is sent to protect the ancient burial sites uncovered by an Alaskan gold mining company. He never returns.

In Anchorage, a female torso—minus head, hands, and feet—is washed ashore near a jogging trail by the airport. It is not the first.

At Alaska’s Fugitive Task Force, Arliss Cutter and deputy Lola Teariki are pulled from their duties and sent to a federal court in Juneau. Instead of tracking dangerous fugitives, Cutter and Lola will be keeping track of sequestered jurors in a high-profile trial. The case involves a massive drug conspiracy with ties to a mining company, a lobbyist, and two state senators. When a prosecuting attorney is murdered—and a reporter viciously attacked—Cutter realizes they’re dealing with something much bigger, and darker, than a simple drug trial. The truth lies deep within the ancient sites and precious mines of this isolated land—and inside the cold hearts of those would kill to hide its secrets…

What’s buried in Alaska stays in Alaska.
