It’s London, 1814, and Darius Cantwell has returned from the blood, pain, and death of war an angry, embittered man. His demeanor cloaks his revulsion at the artificiality of those who had remained home and “safe”. A man unable to adjust to civilian life.

Claire MacFarlane, Countess of Ashkirk; a woman who had ben wed, but never bedded, is looking to find the husband who abandoned her on her wedding day leaving her virtually destitute.

What happens when a man angry at life, decides to make the woman he considers a lying tart, pay for those lies? Especially when she arouses far more than his anger? Well, I must say that this has been an interesting and unusual read. In that era the “innocence” of the females of upper society in regards to sexual activity withstanding, Ms. Dafoe has brought out intriguing possibilities for a first time encounter. There are explicit descriptions to titulate and stimulate
while the characters struggle to grasp truths about lost husbands, fallen friends and themselves. Good reading and great fun.
