Happy Friday 13th!

I do hope you all have a great day and that you are not superstitious! Right now, all I’m getting in my head is the song, ‘Very Superstitious!’ by Stevie Wonder…
Oh, and that I am sooo delighted to have received a copy of Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments, which (unless you’ve been living under a rock) you’ll know is the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. (Apologies to all rock-dwellers out there! Luv you really!)
THANK YOU to Vintage books for sending me this book!
Did you know that Monday 18th November is Margaret Atwood’s 80th Birthday? (I have to say she looks bloody good on it!)
Also, next year, marks thirty-five years since the publication of The Handmaid’s Tale! Oh, my, I remember that….
Do take a look at my snippets below. Would you read further? What are you currently reading?

I can’t wait to visit your blogs to find out. Have a great weekend.

May your books be with you! (And look out for those black cats climbing ladders…)

Luv Sassy  X

🙂

P.S. Little Story…

I was once really, really late back for work when I worked at the University Library in Cambridge, and walked through to town on my lunch hour (oh, the days when we had a whole hour for lunch, and sometimes more, because of that ancient thing called ‘Flexi-time’). On my walk back through the colleges some berk’d placed a huge ladder across my usual route back, and I adamantly (to my colleagues utter dismay) refused to go under it. I ended up taking an even longer route back because (strangely) I would have rather been told off at work than risked some sort of slow death, or whatever it was I thought was going to happen to me at the time!

Needless to say, I am no longer superstitious, but there is always that tiny spec of doubt, like when I spill some salt and I have to resist the urge of throwing some more over my shoulder to scare off the devil… Goodness knows how even came to hear about that one!

Back to the matter in hand…

The Testaments: The Sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale  by Margaret Atwood

** SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2019 BOOKER PRIZE **

Margaret Atwood’s dystopian masterpiece, The Handmaid’s Tale, is a modern classic. Now she brings the iconic story to a dramatic conclusion in this riveting sequel.

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results.

Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’ Margaret Atwood

‘The literary event of the year.’ Guardian

‘A savage and beautiful novel, and it speaks to us today, all around the world, with particular conviction and power… The bar is set particularly high for Atwood and she soars over it’ Peter Florence, Booker Prize Chair of Judges, Guardian
