My Rant?

It’s been pointed out to me that some people may be abusing the Book Cover of the Month Poll, since it first opened in March this year. I hate to say this, but I understand what people are saying. Apparently there is a way to override the PollDaddy polls using a method of which I’d rather keep to myself for now. But today I also discovered in addition to this, there is someone contacting authors involved saying they can get them in top place or second, or even third, in exchange for money.  Really????? This person, obviously knows how to beat the system, too, and is taking advantage of authors, myself, and jeopardising my whole contest in the process. Top that with me feeling like a complete mug, too. Well, I’m sure you can guess how I’m feeling.

I’m SO upset with this. These posts take me a long while to set up and prepare. They’re the most time-consuming of all my posts. I’m doing this to help support Indie authors, who may not be able to get their books noticed as much as those traditionally published.  I really dislike the thought of my polls being tainted with this issue, and of course my reputation. I’ve even had an author ask to be removed from one of the past contests, because they too thought something suspicious going on. Naively I thought maybe this was possible, but not likely happening. After all, I’m just a small blog doing my thing, in the great big scheme of things.

I’d like to point out that that I’m not accusing anyone who has won in previous contests, for all I know you’ve got a lot of fans, and I do allow you to vote once a week! What prompted me to write this was the author who very kindly emailed me to say they’d been approached by someone asking for money to get them to win. This is my major concern. Although, clearly not my only one.

So in short, I’m asking you if you know of any poll companies who stop this from happening. I’m also asking you to bear with me as I’m most likely going to postpone next month’s contest until I’ve got this sorted.

Apologies to all the decent, hardworking authors and cover artists out there!  Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

What do you think?

Any recommended solutions? What would you do in my situation?  Please either leave me a comment below or feel free to contact me off list.

Your help is very much appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

  1. Wow! That is such a terrible situation. I just don’t understand why people need to go an ruin things for other people. So not fair, and I’m so sorry this is happening. I wish I had good advice, but I’m not up on how polls work. I think what you’re doing is the right way to handle it. Checking into other ways to continue your posts without jeopardizing what you’ve built with your blog. If I can help anyway, let me know. Otherwise, I really hope this gets smoothed over for you, quickly!

  2. How sad that something set up to help Indie authors get noticed is being abused by a few people. I can understand why you are upset about it. I don’t do polls on my blog so I’m afraid I can’t offer any help there. I hope you do find a way to sort this.

  3. That’s horrible. I focus a lot on Indie authors too. I know they need some shout outs to be seen in the multitude. Not sure I know enough to help but you might want to reach out to Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewers. She has helped so many bloggers with tips and know how and she might know something. Also, she’s super sweet!

  4. Eugh, what an awful thing to have happening. I’m so sorry, that’s grief you really don’t need. You work incredibly hard and nobody should be stooping so low. I wish I had some suggestions but I’m afraid I don’t. I saw above someone made a suggestion to contact Caffeinated Reviews so I hope she can help you out with some ideas. This is just a hurdle, please don’t let it dishearten you too much; there’s more of the good guys out there in terms of authors and blog readers. Caz xx
