Elevator Pitch: The new crime thriller from number one Sunday Times bestseller and author of A Noise Downstairs Hardcover – 5 Sep 2019 by Linwood Barclay  (Author)

‘You should read ELEVATOR PITCH by Linwood Barclay as soon as possible. It’s one hell of a suspense novel’ STEPHEN KING

‘This novel moves as fast as a falling elevator and hits with just as much force. Linwood Barclay is a stone cold pro and ELEVATOR PITCH is a shameless good time’ JOE HILL

It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, non-stop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets.

Right to the bottom of the shaft.

It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different Manhattan skyscraper. And when Wednesday brings yet another high-rise catastrophe, one of the most vertical cities in the world – and the nation’s capital of media, finance, and entertainment – is plunged into chaos.

Clearly, this is anything but random. This is a cold, calculated bid to terrorize the city. And it’s working. Fearing for their lives, thousands of men and women working in offices across the city refuse leave their homes. Commerce has slowed to a trickle. Emergency calls to the top floors of apartment buildings go unanswered.

Who is behind this? What do these deadly acts of sabotage have to do with the fingerless body found on the High Line? Two seasoned New York detectives and a straight-shooting journalist must race against time to find the answers . . .

Pulsating with tension, Elevator Pitch is a riveting tale of psychological suspense that is all too plausible . . . and will chill readers to the bone.

Review on Alternative-Read.com

Someone is playing havoc with the elevators in Manhattan, finding horrific ways to kill off people using them. But why? Who? Could it be politically motivated, random terrorists, or is down to a group of activists called The Flyovers?
When the doors close, he’s got  you!
From the moment I heard I was able to read this ARC copy after featuring it on a previous Waiting on Wednesday, I was literally chomping at the bit to start. Strangely, it’s starts off with a bang and hooked me in with a lift crashing out of control in the first chapter, and then my initial excitement fizzled out a bit because this whole elevator theme didn’t come back into play until the latter half of the book. Admittedly, this is where the book really took off and I raced through it, pushed by a ticking bomb situation and the realisation of exactly what was going on – which made for a spectacular ending.  It’s just a shame that parts in the middle seem to drag.
I liked getting to know the Mayor better and seeing how he wasn’t all that bad, and then there was reporter Barbara Matheson (who opposes him) with her own problems in life to cope with, but I could have done with a bit more lift disasters! After all, that was what drew me to this book. Like it’s a killer on the loose and you could be next! Is it wrong to want more horror and death?
Nevertheless, this was still a fun read and those characters that did become fatalities were certainly killed off using some ingenious ways.
I have to tip my hat to the way Linwood Barclay did indeed mention the title of the book, in the way most authors would imagine it too. Clever!
I’ll certainly think of this book when I step inside my next lift…
Thanks to the publisher and author. I chose to read and review this book as an ARC from NetGalley. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
