Running to the Edge…

Hi! I’m Annabel Allan, your friendly neighborhood erotic romance author! 

Most know me because of what I write…romance of the BDSM variety. A lot of people wonder how I got into it, which is actually an interesting story! It’s one of those things where everything happens for a reason and seeds are planted early on, sending you on an interesting journey.

The Kinky Beginning: 

 I was first introduced to the idea of BDSM in high school. No, no, I didn’t watch it on the internet or anything like that, and Fifty Shades wasn’t around back then! Actually, a friend of mine was reading some risqué novels in class (erotica). I can’t remember the joke, but it lead to her gifting me one of these particular novels for Christmas—Rude Awakening by Pamela Kyle. 

Obviously, we laughed about it, it was a great gag gift. But that’s kind of how the seed was planted for Edgeplay. The book features a Dominant woman as the heroine, though this book is pure BDSM erotica. No romance here! I remember having it tucked away in my nightstand because I didn’t want anyone to know I had it, sneaking reads here and there. I think that’s where Ava Goode began and my mind was opened to the possibility of writing these types of stories.

There was another seed planted though and that’s the thriller aspect of the book. Again, it was high school, grade 12 English. Our last big project needed to feature a short story written along a theme. My theme for the project was stalking and obsession in media…I wrote a short story featuring a stalker who sent the woman white roses. It ended much differently from Edgeplay, but I felt it was a good story and kept it all these years, tucked into the back of my mind. 

The opportunity to use it then came up, all these years later!

The Kinky Middle:

Writing is a journey! I started at point A with many detours and other stops along the way. When I started out writing, they were sweet romances. It faded to black, the doors closed, that was it. I was actually too timid, too prudish to write anything more than that. But little by little, my love scenes developed, going from sweet to the spiciness we have today. 

An important plot point in my own life was writing my Smoke Chaser series. It was the first step, branching out into the erotic romance territory. Of course, when I completed that series, I needed something fresh and new. After reading and researching a bit, I decided to write my very own BDSM romance. 

This was titled “The Wilder Side” and was D/s written as the Hero being the Dominant and the heroine being the submissive. I wanted to cash in on the wave of popularity for BDSM. The problem with that particular story was that it was mostly erotica. I hadn’t found my balance yet, though I wasn’t aware of this feature of my writing. It was when Ric Savage of BVS told me there wasn’t enough romance in it and ultimately rejected the story that the light kind of came on.

So, I was super bummed. I shelved the work, discouraged. Then a friend of mine, a Daddy Dom, was opening his own dungeon in Toronto, and for his website he wanted to feature short stories, specifically written by me. I agreed, asking for suggestions, some direction—he told me he wanted stories featuring a kick-ass Dominatrix. 

I remember sitting down to write it, that it was a particularly hot summer. I decided to call this short story “Goode Pain”. When I finished writing the short, I realized it wasn’t a short. It was the first chapter in my new book! Edgeplay was born, as was Ava Goode and the series, Goode Pain. 

The Kinky Future:

Obviously, Ric loved the new and improved story! Edgeplay came out in October of 2019 and it has two sequels—Hard Limits and Rigged. I do have the fourth one started, titled Master & Servant. I am very hopeful I will have it completed and ready for publication in 2022. And yes, there will be more after that too! Ava has a lot to say, a lot of barriers to break down. 

But I really wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my friend giving me that book. Writing is kind of the same—sometimes an idea in the beginning is what makes the story come together in the end. Everything happens for a reason!
