Welcome to Alternative-Read.com
Happy to join Christine Schulz on her book tour and giveawaay for her latest urban fantasy, new adult novel, DAWN OF THE DEMON! Below is a special guest post just for you dear readers.
Guest Post with author Christine Schulz
Sassy Brit: What inspired you to write this book?
Christine Schulz: The plot for Dawn of a Demon came about from a very incorrectly name written on a coffee cup and an incident when I panicked and tried to use a baking spatula to kill a spider crawling across my kitchen counter. They say inspiration strikes when you least expect it, and it definitely did! It seems utterly ridiculous to think about a half-cat/half spider shifter with a magical spatula, but that’s exactly what ended up happening!
SB: What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
CS: I enjoyed going off the rails a little bit with the characters. The main character, Zulli, isn’t your typical gorgeous all powerful female with a rare magical ability you typically see in urban fantasy stories, and her male best friend isn’t an evil jerk. In fact, he’s so nice that it comes back to bite him at one point.
SB: What is something unique/quirky about you?
CS: I am double jointed in my shoulders! That basically means I can use my arms to jump rope my body. I’m also an animal lover. Over the course of my life, I’ve lived with 5 dogs, 12 cats, too many fish to count, a hamster, a bird, and even an ant farm! Also, fun fact, I’m allergic to almost every animal except dogs!
SB: What are some of your pet peeves?
CS: The Oxford comma. I know, it’s weird. But even before I became a published author I worked in marketing, which involved writing a lot of content. As a Journalism major in college, proper grammar was drilled into me and I cringe every time I read something and the Oxford comma isn’t used.
SB: Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
CS: How many books have you read with a half-cat/half-spider shifter and a magical baking spatula used to mix the perfect spell? It’s a fun read, but despite the subtle humor I’ve injected into the story, Zulli’s struggles are real. You’ll enjoy this story if you aren’t looking for your typical urban fantasy, where the character has a rare, powerful magic and is the only one who can save the world. Other than her strange shifter combination, Zulli is pretty normal. She just wants to do whatever she can to protect her city and the people she cares about.
SB: What are you passionate about these days?
CS: When I’m not writing, I spend a lot of my time getting lost in my artwork. My latest hobby is 3D rendering and I share a lot of character art across my social channels.
SB: As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
CS: A unipug. I have a furry little pug of my own, and I love her to death. A unipug is the perfect combination of animals: fierce and magical but lazy and cute.
SB: Have you have any “side stories” about the characters?
CS: Yes! You can find a short story, Mixing Magic & Mayhem, available for free on my website. It follows Zulli and her first encounter with that pesky magic spatula.
SB: What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?
CS: I always had a creative mind growing up. I was a weird child who pretended to be a superhero in her backyard, flying around and fighting against trees and bushes with a baseball bat to save the day. And then when I got into trouble for destroying the garden or breaking something, I’d always have an excuse ready. My grandma once told me that I should write a book of excuses one day. I ended up taking a slightly different course as an author, but I did end up getting published! Publishing a book was definitely a life goal of mine, and I’m glad I made the decision to do it
Dawn of a Demon
Nightfly Book 1
by Christine Schulz
Genre: New Adult Urban Fantasy
The fight to save my city and everyone in it has only just begun. It’s time to sharpen the cat claws and unleash the spider fangs because this half shifter always catches her prey.
When a toxic memory-warping drug starts breaking the minds of everyone in the city, it becomes my mission as a military soldier to hunt down the criminal mastermind responsible before its deadly magic claims any more lives. But when the target I’m pursuing attacks my father and I watch helplessly as a good friend perishes before my eyes, things get personal. Now, I’ll bend every rule to bring down the savage who dragged my family and friends into this mess.
Unfortunately, saving the city and the people I care about comes at a cost. When I discover the true reason this magic has infested my home, I’m forced to make an impossible choice: do I protect the people I love or put an end to this catastrophe once and for all to stop more minds from being destroyed ever again?
Christine is a pug loving foodie who has an unhealthy obsession with unicorns, and you’ll definitely see bits of that shine through in her stories. As a young child, she would put her imagination to work, pretending to live in a fantasy world where she could fly, fight the bad guys, and save the world. Although she could never master the art of flying, she did manage to eventually put all those ideas down on paper and is currently working on two series: Black Sheep and NightFly.
