Long-time yaoi fan Grant didn’t expect to be so attracted to the main character of his latest purchase—and he definitely didn’t expect to wake up next to him one morning. But that’s what happened. Even the sparkles, hearts, and small animals from the manga follow Teruo around Grant’s apartment. If Grant weren’t so distracted by lust, he’d find it really annoying.
When Teruo announces that he intends to stay with Grant because he has nowhere else to go, Grant is both pleased and terrified. Grant has been alone too long, and even with the sparkles, Teruo has made his way into Grant’s heart. But if Grant can’t find the words to tell Teruo how he feels, Teruo might vanish as suddenly as he appeared.

The grocery store wasn’t at all busy, which was good as far as Grant was concerned. The tiny devil on Teruo’s shoulder had gone away, but the angel halo was still there, and he didn’t want to have to answer any questions about it. Or about Teruo, who craned his neck to look at everything on every shelf they passed. “Don’t they have grocery stores where you’re from?” Grant finally snapped.
“Not like this.” Teruo tilted his head, looking confused. “You think I’m from regular Japan, don’t you? I am from that country, but manga isn’t exactly reality. How many times did you see me going to a store in the book?”
“So you only did what the author showed you doing?” That didn’t seem possible. Teruo had hinted at more of a relationship with Satoru than had been depicted, for one thing. And then there were all the personal hygiene things that everyone did but no one ever showed in books. Surely Teruo had done at least some of those things.
“Not exactly.” Teruo frowned, then shrugged. “It’s hard to explain. I don’t remember everything, you know. All I remember right now is that we’re supposed to be buying food, so come on. There are so many things I want to try.”
He skipped—literally skipped, to Grant’s amused embarrassment—down the aisle. After glancing around to make sure no one else had seen, Grant followed.
They hadn’t taken a shopping cart, but by the time they’d gone through two aisles, they needed one. Teruo seemed determined to buy everything on the shelves. With his arms full of stuff he never would have bought on his own, Grant groaned and headed for the front of the store.
“Where are you going?” Teruo asked. “We’re not done.”
“I’m done trying to carry all this. I’m getting a cart.” Grant looked at Teruo’s armful. “You’re picking out too many things. Half of this is going to have to go back. I can’t afford it.”
“I have money, remember? Besides, this will stock you up for a while, since you apparently don’t like shopping.”
“It isn’t that I don’t like to shop. I just don’t see the point.” Grant looked at his load again. Cookies, crackers, cereal. Rice. Cans of things he’d never heard of, that Teruo had chosen in the Asian foods section. He would never eat this stuff in a million years, and since he doubted Teruo would be around long enough to finish it off, buying it would be a waste. No matter who was paying.
“Just go get a cart,” Teruo said. “If you think we’re choosing too much, fine. I’ll put back a few things. Right now, I’m having fun. I’ve never had a chance to just go wild in a store before.”
Going wild in a grocery store seemed a little strange to Grant. Then again, everything about Teruo seemed a little strange. Instead of commenting, he went to the front of the store and grabbed a cart.
The cart, with its limited amount of room for items, made it easier for Grant to put limits on the things Teruo chose. Teruo bickered cheerfully with him when Grant told the other man to put things back, and some of the other shoppers seemed amused when they walked past. A few even gave Grant and Teruo approving smiles.
“They think we’re a cute couple,” Teruo said after the third elderly woman winked at them. “I think they’re right, and yet you’re still trying to figure out how to get rid of me, aren’t you?”
“Not get rid of so much as figuring out how to work it out if you don’t disappear.” Grant put a jar of instant coffee in the cart. So far, that was the only thing he’d chosen for himself. Everything else in the cart had been Teruo’s choice. Most of the food was loaded with sugar or salt, the kind of things Grant’s doctor would have flipped out about. Completely unhealthy stuff, but somehow it seemed appropriate for Teruo. Not that Grant objected to unhealthy food.
