My Sister ARC Cover

To some this may not be particularly scary in itself, but please humour me and allow me to describe the context. I’ve got a postbox out the front of my house  because one of my dogs always used to chew anything that came through our door. Books included!  (I know, sacrilege!) Last week, I dipped my hand in and pulled out a massive spider. I didn’t know this straight away until I brought my post inside and sorted through it. Now, let’s get one thing clear, I’m (shit) scared of spiders. So much so, I will say I have a real phobia when it comes to arachnids. Needless to say now I will not get my own post out of the postbox, and have to wait for my husband to come to do it for me. Lame, I know. But I just cannot do it. LOL

Anyway, it was late, just gone midnight, I was tired and about to go to bed when I remembered I hadn’t checked the post (meaning I hadn’t reminded my hubby to retrieve it for me), so he kindly brought one parcel in and watched me open it…

And out slips this weird photo of two young girls with their faces scratched off. No book title. No immediate signs of what it is. We’re tired and not thinking straight. WTF? Thanks Headline Books. I almost had to change my knickers…

Well, let me say — whoever is in charge of #MySister marketing plan, has got this down to a T — as they say. Spot on. I love it! Just like I am really into edgy, crazy-girl, psychological thrillers at the moment.

My Sister by Michelle Adams is my feature book for this Friday 56 Meme. I’m also taking part in Book Beginnings, a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader.

An edgy, crazy-girl, psychological thriller. On my Goodreads bookshelf aptly titled : One of those crazy girl books. (Crazy as in psycho!)

Here are a couple of sentences from page 56:

“Yes they are. I remember the day you came sliding out of the dead woman in the very next room.”

Book Beginnings:

“The buzzing of my telephone is like the scuttling of a cockroach underneath the bed.”
What are yours? Do say hi. I will pop over and visit  your blog, too. I’m so looking forward to see what other books have been chosen for this meme!

Gone Without a Trace
Gone Without a Trace by Mary Torjussen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This review is from: Gone Without A Trace: Her boyfriend has vanished. Now someone is watching her. (Paperback)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme

I am reviewing the book ‘Gone Without A Trace’ by Mary Torjussen. When Hannah returns home one day to find her boyfriend, Matt, has not only upped and left her but also taken everything he owns, too; it’s as if he never existed. Shocked, saddened and then angry at how he could have left her with no warning, in such a harsh way, Hannah sets out to track him down to get the answers she deserves. Meanwhile, her life is crumbling around her and someone playing with her mind. If it’s not Matt then who else would have it in for her? Here are my thoughts:

^^ Mary Torjussen has written a terrific book, with an increasingly popular ‘forever-doomed female lead’ I will never tire of. Ever.

^^ Written in first person point of view provides the author that element of emotional unreliability with the main character, who only tells you what she wants, or remembers. I love that, especially in a plot of this style.

^^ Hannah is a great character and one to really root for as her story unfolds with several heart-racing moments that will have you questioning your own reactions if this was happening to you. I mean, once you’ve read the book, come back and tell me, who is really to blame here?

^^ Equally brilliant (and I am sorry if I sound too gushy) is the ending, which was just as it should be. Shocking, depressing with a hint of ‘yeah, go girl!’ Once you’ve read the book, you’ll know what I mean about this plot trend (it’s like a misshapen form of ‘girl power’ and I think this is why it works).

^^ Mary Torjussen makes writing a book appear so easy; evidence of her great writing skills.

^^ Gone Without A Trace, is an easy, yet complex, exciting book to read, and one I will not forget in a hurry.

^^ Although this is in a very similar style of many other ‘Luckiest Girl Alive/Girl on a Train/Gone Girl’ from-bad-to-worse-twisted-girl-plots of which I have read many and loved, this is equally good and one I’d put up in the bestsellers list for 2017. I can already see the film version in my mind and eagerly anticipate its arrival on screen. This is was drama is all about.

Overall:
Best book I’ve read lately. It’s so fast-paced, tense, and intriguing, I felt totally worn out by the time I finished reading (which was in about 2 days) and cannot wait to read more of Mary Torjussen’s work. This was one emotional journey. What’s next?

Review: My Sister’s Bones @NualaWrites @DeadGoodBooks #AltRead #PsychologicalThriller #Psycho #Thriller

My Sister's Bones
My Sister’s Bones by Nuala Ellwood

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This review is from: My Sister’s Bones (Hardcover) Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme

I am reviewing the book My Sister’s Bones by Nuala Ellwood. Here are my thoughts:

^^ The story line has a similar Gone Girl/Girl on the Train theme, but with that added punch of characters dealing with the psychological fallout of the trauma of reporting in dangerous conflict zones around the world, highlighting the chaos of war and the bravery of all those involved.

^^ The book starts with Kate being questioned by the police, for a crime that we only understand as we read through the book. It alternates this with gradually revealing the events of a week earlier leading up to the reason why Kate is being questioned, making me eager to race through the book for answers. In fact, I read “My Sister’s Bones” in under two days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
^^ Written in first the person point of view initially and then splits into three parts; the first being the main character, Kate, then her sister Sally, and finally the gripping conclusion is handed back to Kate again as all is revealed.

^^ I found splitting the book up in this way (like a three plot structure) was great idea as it provided the ability to really get inside the minds of each character, allowing Sally to provide a few answers brought up from Kate’s side of the story, and vice versa.

^^ This has to be one of my favourite reads this year, and I will look out for more work from author, Nuala Ellwood.

Overall: A gripping book with everything I love in a story; fully rounded characters facing realistic challenges, an engrossing back story, and a surprising twist at the end that I did not see coming.

Baggage! We all carry it with us through life. It comes in a wide variety of styles, shapes, and colors; and no matter how we dress it up, it’s frustrating, inconvenient, and slows us down. In fact, it’s downright disruptive.

Book Blurb

by Dan Klefstad

Shepherd_

Most people take comfort knowing their family and friends will remember them after they die. For Susan Shepherd, “remembering” is bullsh!t. She wants an eternal shrine to her sacrifice: a book that never goes out of print. Shepherd served her country in the Gulf War, got shot while serving her community as a cop, raised an ungrateful daughter by herself — and for what? A diagnosis of terminal cancer and she isn’t even fifty. If you were in her shoes, you might agree that nothing short of national perpetual acknowledgement will do. She’s glad you feel that way; she just wrote a memoir and sent a flurry of query letters, hoping a publisher will memorialize her with a best-seller. After hitting Send, she waits not-at-all patiently for an editor to decide if her story will sell enough copies — that is, if her life really mattered.

Our Words Matter

How true! Our words really do matter. Great post…

Tuesdays with Laurie

words, Words, WORDS—I’m up to my neck in words as I craft my next book—The Business of Being. And I’m thoroughly enjoying every minute of it!

During the day I write them. Throughout the evening I read them. I’ve devoured six books since I’ve been here.

A week before I left for my three-month sabbatical, I had the privilege of speaking with a small group of entrepreneurial millennials. One of the topics we discussed was how our words matter.

Hint # 6 — The town where I’m enjoying my sabbatical is one of the few towns in the continental United States that boasts only one—count em, ONE!—drive-thru coffee shop.

My friend Dawn said, “Our words create our world.” That’s one of the reasons I suggest that my clients voice what they want and refrain from stating what they don’t want.

For example, instead of making statements…
