The Little Book of Conspiracies: 50 reasons to watch your back~ Joel Levy~ Portobello Books ~ Non-Fiction

Nothing happens by accident…

You know how it is, there you are one day floating through life without a care in the world, and then “boom!” a book slaps you straight in the face and shouts “wake up!” This, dear readers, is one of those books. Your wake up call.

The author, Levy, helpfully provides snack-sized summaries of 50 conspiracy theories from around the world, with as many reasons to watch your back. It’s an honest, revealing look at parapolitics; a slightly more respectable/fancy name for conspiracy theories.

The Little Book of Conspiracies: 50 reasons to watch your back offers alternative perspectives in field-guide format. What I like about this book is how Levy breaks down each conspiracy into three segments. “What the theorists say”, “The official line”, and “How paranoid should we be?” as a percentage out of 100.

These theories are not always as far fetched as “Did Elvis fake his own death?” (1%), or “Was Marilyn Monroe murdered because she was protecting or blackmailing the Kennedy brothers?” (3%). Some of these theories could be happening to you, at this very moment! For example the “Office of Information Awareness” (OIA) set up a programme called “Total Information Awareness” (TIA) in the wake of 9/11, by the US Department of Defence. This programme aims to collect, store and analyse as much information about EVERYONE, through advanced technology. An Orwellian government?

The Official line — the programme is purely just a new approach to tackle terrorism and international security – although there would have been safeguards to protect privacy and civil liberties, none of this matters anyway as the programme was shelved and the OIA/TIA no longer exists.

However, in Levy’s reply to “how paranoid should we be?” he says, many things that prove otherwise with a paranoid factor of 92%.

“A form of the TIA programme has existed for over 50 years. The National Security Agency’s Echelon project is a top secret telecommunications monitoring system and operates a global network of spy stations that tap into all forms of electronic communication.

“Next time you are refused entry to the US for no apparent reason, try to recall whether you once made disparaging remarks about the President in a phone call or glanced at a website critical of US policy, chances are ‘they’ know all about it.”

Although Levy writes in a light-hearted manner to dispel our fears, he also acknowledges them with some sobering facts and examples.

Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed this book and do not wish to discredit Mr Levy’s knowledge, I did wonder what makes Levy such an expert. So I tried to check out his credentials, and all I could find out was a small bio. (See below). Hmm. Is this because he knows too much he doesn’t want to divulge his own personal data for fear the government would grab him? Or does he in fact secretly work among the highest echelons of the CIA himself, and only tells us what he wants us to believe…?
