Someone Else’s Baby by Ruby Speechley

REVIEW: After Charlotte Morgan’s mother suffered through several years of miscarriages, and was unable to have more children, she decides that after having one child of her own she could make another childless couple very happy and be a surrogate mother for them. Malcolm and Brenda seem the perfect couple, but when the last payment bounces and the couple disappear with her two children she had for them, Charlotte starts to worry. Something doesn’t add up, and when they search the surrogate site and ask other surrogate mothers if they know Malcolm and Brenda, they are shocked at what they find out.
I do think the logline – ‘She gave her away her children. Now she wants them back’, kind of lead me to believe this would be about a surrogate mother creeping back into the house of her children’s new parents to steal/harass them. (Ruby, could that be your next book?) However, that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this different twist. If anyone else was expecting the same, then I’m happy to say that this felt more true to life than a new family being tormented and taken hostage by the biological mother of the children she wants back. That sounds more like stuff books are made from, (HAHA!) whereas this could easily happen and (okay, let’s get serious here) most likely, I’m sad to say, already has!
In this story, we see the less explored other side of surrogacy.
What if the people who are going to end up with your baby are not who they say they are?
Do you realise that when they pay you to take your baby away, the amount you receive might not be anything like the large amount the new ‘parents’ could get for selling your baby on again to someone else. Whoever that may be! Paedophiles? Child traffickers? Such a frightening thought! This book certainly makes you think about all the possible outcomes a transaction like this could offer, and not many of them good.
With this in mind, this story highlights the urgent need for UK surrogacy laws to be updated. Looking at it from this point of view, I can see how some kind-hearted surrogate mothers could be completely conned. It’s shocking.  I’d certainly recommend this as a book club choice, given the content matter is so controversial.
An exciting, well-rounded debut read, which had me hooked from start to finish. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Someone Else’s Baby by Ruby Speechley

She gave away her children. Now she wants them back.

Charlotte Morgan knows how it feels to desperately want a baby. As a child, seeing her mum devastated by losing her longed-for babies, Charlotte wished another woman could give her mother what she so craved.

Now Charlotte’s a mum herself, and knowing how much love her daughter, Alice, brings into her life, she vows to help others achieve their dreams of becoming a parent.

When she meets Malcolm and Brenda on a surrogacy website, it seems she’s found the perfect couple. In their late forties, they have wealth and an enviable life, but there’s one thing missing – a child of their own.

When Charlotte falls pregnant with twins, the pair are overjoyed. And while Charlotte’s heart breaks as she hands them over, her reward is knowing how much happiness the two tiny babies are going to bring into their life.

But are Malcolm and Brenda all they seem? As secrets become unravelled, Charlotte is forced to face that she has given her children to virtual strangers. And when Malcolm and Brenda disappear without a trace, Charlotte is plunged into a frantic search for the babies she carried – before it’s too late…
