Why? I received the lovely book The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations by Joe Tracz (book pictured above) to review and realised I just had to watch the Netflix TV series, which I am now doing, at the same time as reading all the books!

So without further ado… I present… Book beginnings & F56 on Alternative-Read.com

First thoughts

My First Thoughts?

Finally the Baudelaire children have some allies that are not flaky! (I’m rooting for them to stick with these most unfortunate kids. They could do with some luck, however short-lived!)

In The Austere Academy  – Book 5 I have to say that Carmelita Spats (the fantastic drawing above in black and white) truly does deserve that ‘least delightful person on Earth’ gold medal award, she’s a monster!  lol
I found that she reminds me so much of Violet Elizabeth Botts in the Just William stories. Anyone here old enough to have read those, or (worse still, showing my age) seen that Just William series on the telly, and actually know what I mean?
“I’ll scream and scream and scream until I’m sick!”
I swear Carmelita is Violet reincarnated!
Runs off to get my zimmer frame… or should that be shuffles?

About the book | Alternative-Read.com

Dear reader,

There is nothing to be found in Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-selling series to read. But if you insist on discovering the unpleasant adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, then proceed with caution…

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky.

In The Austere Academy the siblings face snapping crabs, strict punishments, dripping fungus, comprehensive exams, violin recitals, S.O.R.E. and the metric system.

In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted.

Despite their wretched contents, ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ has sold 60 million copies worldwide and been made into a Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey. And in the future things are poised to get much worse, thanks to the forthcoming Netflix series starring Neil Patrick Harris. You have been warned.

Are you unlucky enough to own all 13 adventures? Yep, I am going to bore you share my Lemony Snicket love and devotion — ten more times! You lucky things, you! If you don’t want to read them all by then, well, I give up! lol

And what about All the Wrong Questions? In this four-book series a 13-year-old Lemony chronicles his dangerous and puzzling apprenticeship in a mysterious organisation that nobody knows anything about:

‘Who Could That Be at This Hour?’

‘When Did you Last See Her?’

‘Shouldn’t You Be in School?’

‘Why is This Night Different from All Other Nights?’

As much as I love my Kindle (see last week’s answer) and I also read from my phone, I am first and foremost a physical book lover and (not-so-secret) book sniffer, so I get a lot of physical books. Housing them is always a problem. But the biggest problem I find is getting rid of a lot of them. And it pains me to even say those words! But due to some heavy ARC restrictions, rules and regulations, some ARCs cannot be passed on to friends, or even given away to charity shops for others to enjoy.  Very frustrating! I really dislike throwing them away – so I tend to hang on to them. An awful lot of them. Until I forced to sadly purge…

Where do I get my books?

I buy my books from Amazon, and a support a local bookstore when I can get there. Although, most of my books are sent to me via authors, publishers and I’m very fortunate to be in the Amazon Vine and Amazon Influencer programmes.

  1. What I love is the aplomb and humor that the author uses to detail the horrible things that happen in the series. Makes you shiver, but also compels you to keep reading because you just can’t wait to find out what is next.

Kudos on all the reading/reviewing you do and that you are an Amazon influencer.
