Hallie Clearwater, a human “enhanced” to save her life, must form an alliance with a parolee in order to find and eliminate a traitor. What she didn’t count on was instant mutual attraction and genuine liking interfering with the job.
Dennis Highcliff has spent most of the last year in prison, literally in a hole in the ground. Though he is a “pure” male he doesn’t agree with all the tenets of the PHF (Pure Human Faction), but will agree to almost anything for a shot at clearing his name. Helping Hallie find the traitor will give him just such a chance.
Although I find it rather sad to think that prejudice and racism are alive and well in the future, I realize it is necessary to the plot (oh, yes, I did say plot!) of this book. I can’t see the point of PHF (Pure Human Faction) if it means allowing a loved one to die or live a quality of life I myself wouldn’t want. But there you have it; that’s just my opinion. Yet just as it does today man will use to his advantage even what he hates and fears if it means protecting a child or children.
As Hallie and Highcliff race against time to find the person who not only put him away, but killed several other people in a bombing (including Hallie’s brother) the intensity of the attraction between the two of them burns even hotter. The interaction of the characters is written to hold the interest while the plot twists just enough to keep you guessing. In Desperate Alliance I think Robie Madison has set the beginning for what could become a very good series.
