148. Alternative NEWS: Turkey ~ No Place for Authors!

The Independent Communications Network found 16 journalists had been put on trial in Turkey in the first nine months of this year, with 12 of them being found guilty.

The Publishers Association said that, in the 18 months until this summer, 37 authors were tried for criminal offences in connection with the publication of 47 books.

I bet Orhan Pamuk, doesn’t call this “freedom of expression,” after his case today was adjourned as the presiding judge decides whether a new law making it a crime to insult the national identity could be applied to the novelist’s case.

Mr Pamuk is on trial for “denigrating” Turkishness, and faces up to three years in jail if found guilty.
